My work as a scholar and educator focuses on how institutional arrangements and policy and planning processes impact outcomes. Toward this end, I encourage students to reflect on their everyday surroundings and engage with the institutional and political processes that produce those surroundings. As an educator, I have the opportunity to show students effective methods of engagement, whether it is forums in which to engage, questions to ask, or issues to raise. My teaching philosophy is to demonstrate to students the significance of their own agency, not only as scholars but as practitioners, advocates, and members of their communities. This is accomplished by first conveying knowledge and facts, and then by delineating the issues and institutional processes involved in policy making and planning that allow students the space to engage with that material.
